This course is an intensive training program designed for diplomats to attain total mastery of
Korean, Korean culture, and Korean society.

  • 1 This program is targeted at diplomats who have been dispatched to Korea in order to help them fulfill their diplomatic duties in Korea.
  • 2 This course is an immersion program that focuses on daily Korean together with specialized terminology related to working life and Korean culture, with the goal of improving the ability of students to perform their diplomatic duties in Korea. The course is divided into a language study portion and a portion designed to improve the working capabilities of students by focusing on Korean culture and current affairs.
  • 3 The course materials include news, reports, internet articles, videos, and so on. The culture portion of the course allows students to directly experience Korean culture.
  • 4 The course period and class times are commissioned by embassy personnel. Sogang University offers both individual and group classes.
  • 5 The course materials are matched to the interests and professional fields of the students. Through lessons in Korean studies, literature, culture, and field trips, students learn the necessary information about Korean culture, society, art, history, and other fields that is required for them as diplomats.

The course is updated in ongoing consultation with embassies.

Learning Korean that can be used in social situations

Students learn to understand and use contemporary Korean language in social situations. The course promotes an understanding of Korean culture, politics, economics, and overall Korean society for diplomats, providing a balanced experience of various cultural activities that cover such territory as regionalism, history, various professional fields, and generational issues.

Course layout and class introduction

The course consists of three portions: a language class, a current affairs class, and a culture class.

Language class

  • After being assigned to the appropriate level following a language test, students have the option of choosing either individual lessons or a group class.
  • Level assignment is determined by an interview and a level test. After being assigned to the appropriate level, students study vocabulary, grammar, expressions, dialogues, reading, listening, writing, and so on in an integrated, systematic way.

Current affairs class

  • Students study vocabulary that is closely related to their diplomatic duties, and use this vocabulary to practice dialogues.
  • Students become proficient in the appropriate situational application of expressions that are useful in the course of diplomatic work.
  • Students become proficient in key vocabulary relating to current affairs and come to understand the Korean perspective as they use a variety of mediums to study and debate news covering Korean politics, economics, culture, and other social topics.
  • Students become proficient in a variety of strategies including reading, summarizing and reporting news, expressing opinions, debating, and so on.
  • Students acquire professional knowledge of Korean society, selecting topics of interest to present and debate on as a way to increase the depth and breadth of their knowledge.
  • As students acquire advanced vocabulary and expressions that are related to their assigned duties in Korea, they are able to enhance their professional knowledge and capabilities.

Culture Class

  • Learners select a cultural topic that is of interest to them from a list and thoroughly immerse themselves in the topic.
  • Students learn about Korean culture through museum visits, performances, the study of military arts, industrial arts, culinary arts, visiting tourist attractions, and so on.

Evaluation

  • The speaking evaluation will be interviewed by an ACTFL Oral Proficiency Interview(OPI) specialist.
  • Check the improvement of learners every month and report the grade report to the embassy
