    Course Goals

    • 1 Level 1 Student can perform basic communication necessary for daily life.
    • 2 Level 2 Student can perform basic communication necessary for daily life and also understand Korean culture.
    • 3 Level 3 Student can communicate in and understand almost all expressions used in most ordinary situations in Korean society.
      Upon completion of the KLEC regular course level 3 or higher, the qualifications for applying for international admission application
      of the Sogang University undergraduate program(based on language proficiency)
      and the benefit from the “Sogang University Scholarship for Korean Language Education Center” (Exemption from admission fee)

    • 4 Level 4 Student can understand and use expressions in basic social situations in Korean society.
    • 5 Level 5 Student can understand and use expressions in everyday social situations in Korean society.
    • 6 Level 6 Student can understand and use expressions in almost any social situation.
    • 7 Level 7
      (Highest level, Special Advanced Course)       Student can understand and use contemporary expressions in Korean society,
      and has a deeper understanding of Korean society.

    • Raising problems and proposing solutions
    • Debating the pros and cons of the jury system

    Course Introduction

    Speaking
    • Speaking class is divided into a study section and a usage section.
    • In the study portion, students learn the grammar, vocabulary, and topic for that day’s class, which are organized to facilitate the ability to use them in basic dialogues.
    • In the usage portion of the class, students use the grammar and expressions studied that day to complete given tasks.
    • After communication activities, students exchange their various opinions on given problems.
    • Learners increase their ability to communicate through task-based, communicative activities.
    Listening
    • Sogang University’s listening classes are a bit different from ordinary listening courses.
    • In listening and speaking class, which is task-based, the emphasis is placed on activities where students acquire important information by listening.
    • The role of the teacher in these activities is not to explain or tell the students what it is they are listening to, but rather to help and guide the students in understanding the information that is being heard so that they are able to discuss it amongst themselves.
    Reading
    • Sogang University’s reading classes are also different from ordinary reading courses.
    • Reading activities go beyond the level of reading a test and understanding it.
    • Rather, they are learner-centered, focusing on student interactions and speaking creatively about the topics.
    • After students read a passage, they use that passage as the basis for speaking and writing activities.
    Writing
    • Sogang University’s writing activities are effective at helping students who struggle with a large gap between their accuracy and fluency.
    • In writing class, students learn to understand a variety of expressions and the structure of the Korean language.
    • In this class, students practice and enhance their vocabulary.
    • In the first stage of writing, students think and write, following the instructor’s consistent guidance.
    • Later on, students receive individual instruction that helps them to express themselves accurately and fluently.
    Video
    • From level 5 onwards, Sogang University students use videos in class, watching dramas, movies, news, and so on.
    • By watching dramas, students are able to learn fresh, contemporary, realistic language.

    Weekend Review

    During the weekend review session, students participate in information gathering activities, role-playing activities, word games, and other fun ways to reinforce vocabulary and expressions learned during the week.

    Evaluation

    • In order to advance to the next level, students must score over 70% on the final exam in each class (speaking, reading, listening, and writing) as well as in their speaking interview.
    • Please note that a student may not re-register for the same class more than 3 times
      (this includes cases where students must repeat a level due to excessive absences and cases where grades are too low)

    Attendance

    • Students must attend at least 70% of classes in order to be allowed to re-register.
    • In the event that a student attends fewer than 70% of classes, they will not be allowed to advance to the next level or to re-register. (Total class hours : 200, 70% attendance : 140 hours)
    • Even in special cases, absences will not be counted as attendance.
    • Please note that a student may not re-register for the same class more than three times
      (this includes cases where students must repeat a level due to excessive absences and cases where grades are too low).
